303rd

Seven years ago, we were invited to do a “surprise” escort for a member of America’s Greatest Generation on Veteran’s Day; those who participated that day were able to meet and talk with a truly humble hero…Captain Abbott Smith. He was a decorated bombardier who flew dozens of missions in B-17 aircraft as part of the 303rd Bomb Group. It was a special day, and one I remember well, and I am sad to say we received word that at 97 years of age, Abbott has passed from this life.

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to honor Abbott Smith one more time, by standing in silent honor and respect during his funeral service on Wednesday, December 2nd, and we certainly want to fulfill that request. This mission will consist of a flag line during the visitation, providing escort to the cemetery, and a final flag line during the interment service where he will receive full military honors. If you are able to safely fly flags from your bike/cage during the escort, please come prepared to do so; the escort will cover approx 10 miles and will not be high-speed. LEO support during the escort will be provided by Huntington/Barboursville PD.
